Llandudno - Shifting Of The May Day Holiday

Space Boutique

Llandudno could lose one of the largest transport festivals in Wales, if the government decides to move the May Day bank holiday to October. Situated alongside the azure waters of the Irish Sea, Llandudno is a top seaside resort in Wales, with thousands of people checking-in to inns, bed and breakfast boutiques and hotels in Llandudno every year. In fact, a huge majority of the populace lives on income generated from tourism-related activities, such as running sightseeing tours, restaurants and bed and breakfast boutiques in town.

One of the most popular annual events in town is the Llandudno Transport Festival. This festival usually brings about 30,000 visitors to hotels in Llandudno, injecting millions of pounds into the economy of the town. It has been held on the May 1st bank holiday for the past twenty years, in conjunction with the Victorian Extravaganza, another big event in Llandudno. Westminster is currently considering a proposal to move this bank holiday to October, and a decision is expected to be announced in December 2011. If it is decided to move the bank holiday, the change would come into effect from 2013.

According to organisers of the Llandudno Transport Festival, moving the festival to October would not be feasible as the grounds on which it is held (Bodafon Fields) is usually waterlogged during the wet month of October. The bad weather would make it very difficult to move heavy vehicles and steam engines at the festival venue, and also result in a huge mess, which tourists from hotels in Llandudno would not like to visit.

Llandudno is a charming tourist town, and usually sees the best weather in the month of May, when vacationers come flocking down to its bed and breakfast boutiques for a quiet holiday. According to the town mayor, Greg Robbins, "If the Bank Holiday is moved we will lose peak holiday time". Most people in town are opposing the move to shift the holiday, with the town council voting to write to the tourism minister John Pensrose about the issue.
